Changing Jobs
From start to finish, finding and accepting a new job can be a stressful chain of events. However, if you know what questions to ask both yourself and the companies you are interviewing, the process is much easier to tackle.
Overall Company Qualities:
- What is the size of the company and the team you’d work with? Would you be a small fish in a big pond, or a big fish in a small pond?
- What is the company’s reputation? Is it respected in its field?
- What is the company’s mission statement or philosophy, and does it sync with your own philosophy?
- Is the company growing? Is it in a growing industry?
Interview Process:
- What kind of benefits does the company offer? (401K, Healthcare, Insurance, ESPP)
- Is there a path of career progression within the company?
- Will you have a mentor that supports your career growth?
- Is company equity a part of compensation or available via ESPP?
Should you Accept the Offer?
- Does the compensation package allow you to save enough money to meet the goals in your financial plan?
- If not, is there potential career growth that will enable you to save more money later?
- Will your mentor help as you navigate the company and be an advocate for your career growth?
- Do company benefits, or lack thereof, help or hinder your ability to meet your financial goals?
After you Accept an Offer
Once you accept an offer, it’s important to work with a knowledgeable advisor regarding how this critical financial event impacts your financial plan.
- Review your new monthly cash flow. How can your cash flow surplus be best utilized?
- Review your 401K Summary Plan Description. What types of contributions and investment choices are available?
- Review your stock vesting schedule, if applicable. What are you going to do with your company stock when it vests?
